j RAILWAY CARRIAGE THEFTS. By Telegraph—Press Association, j Rotorua, Last Night. For some time past complaints have been made'of thefts from the railway premises of articles left in the carriages by forgetful passengers, and of packages from goods sheds. At the Magistrate's Court, John Simpson, foreman platelayer, was fined £5, or in default one month's imprisonment, for stealing an umbrella from a carriage. TIMARU FIRE ENQUIRY. Timaru, Last Night. A magisterial inquiry was held to-day into the circumstances of the fire at John Edmond's store on the evening of New Year's Day, - which destroyed or damaged six to seven thousand pounds' worth of ironmongery stock. An open verdict was returned. The only evidence that had a direct bearing on the question was that of H. G. Keith, a traveller for the firm, and Hayes, shop assistant, who were in the store about half an hour before the fire was discovered. They both noticed on entering a slight , smell of smouldering fire. They made an inspection .of the premises, but could detect nothing.
AUCKLAND'S NEW CLOCK. Auckland, Last Night. The fpur dial clock in the tower of the Town Hall, which has been presented by Mr.-Arthur M. Myers, M.P. (an ex-Mayor), was set in operation at noon to-day by the Mayor (Mr. C. J. Parr), in the presence of several citizens. The Mayor subsequently unveiled a handsome tablet erected for the purpose of commemorating the gift of Mr. Myers. The clock is described as being of admirable workmanship and finish. The makers (Messrs. Gillett and Johnston) have just installed one of a similar type at Toronto. "The works," added Mr. Bartlett, to whom .was entrusted the installing of the new' clock, "are really first-class apd calculated to last for generations owing to the high quality of the materials used,'and the excellence of the manufacture." ] SHORT LIBERTY. Wellington, Last Night. George Armitage, a Burnham School boy, serving three years, and Arthur Thomas Reid, serving two years, both for breaking and entering, escaped from the Mount Cook prison gang this afternoon, but were both captured be"Tore sundown. Reid was arrested a few minutes after escaping, but Armitage remained at large f6r nearly three hours. Both submitted tamely when caught, offering no resistance. NELSON COLLEGE OLD BOYS. Wanganui, Last Night. At a well-attended reunion of Nelson College Old Boys to-night it was decided to form a branch of the Old Boys' Association. OBJECTION TO PROPOSED ASYLUM SITE. Auckland, Last Night. At a special meeting of the Grey Lynn Borough Council to-night resolutions were carried strongly protesting""againßt She Government's proposal to erect a new auxiliary mental hospital at Point Chevaier, adjoining Grey Lynn boundary, and lrgmg that it should be placed on the Vsylum property of 10,000 acres in the i.ing Country near Te Awamutu.
