PALMERSTON FIRE BOARD. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, Yesterday. The fife board lias decided to purchase a Simon's petrol motor lire engine, with turbine pump, and fire escape attached. It will be one of the latest appliances in the Dominion, and marks a considerable advance in local fire prevention appliances. ALLEGED WIFE DESERTION. Wellington, Yesterday. Henry Baker, formerly in business in Wellington as a tailor, was arrested at Melbourne yesterday on a charge of wife desertion. A detective leaves by the Moana to-day to bring him back. SLY GROG-SELLING. Dunedin, Yesterday. Patrick Collins, landlord of the old Xorth-Western Hotel, Palmerston South, which is in a no-license district, was lined and costs for selling liquor without a license. The Magistrate declined to accept counsel's contention that this was an isolated case.
