ENTERTAINMENTS.

EMPIRE THEATRE. ' The attractive series of pictures comprising the change of. programme, attracted a good audience to the Empire Theatre last night. "Manners and Customs in Malaysia" is an exceptionally interesting series of views in the Malay Archipelago. "Cultivation of Manioc" is a scenic industrial picture, showing the manner of treating the familiar table commodity tapioca. "Pathe's Animated Gazette No. 112" is again brimful of recent notable events. The fine educational value of this weekly Gazette has made that film a most popular number •n the regular programme. The dramatic section Was well arranged, and the subjects chosen reflect great credit wr t}ie film studios represented. The .principal dramatic subject is a Homeric song of "Olios and Phyletes," admirably staged and acted by the Star Co. The comic section is unique in respect to two entirely original studies, the first, "Dinner Time," introducing a number of birds and animals that were well known to the majority of last night's audience. The other comic calling for special mention is an A.R. study, entitled "The Diving Girl." This is again entirely removed' from the beaten comic track, and proves a most enjoyable finish to a well devirstfied programme. The full programme will be repeated to-night. ELTHAM CHOPPING EVENTS.

To-morrow night a 1000 ft. film- of the great chopping contests at Eltham on Boxing Day will be shown. This ,is an excellent film, and reproduces in a wonderfully vivid manner the many interesting chopping, sawing, and cycling events also passing glimpses of the crowd. ' PICTURE OF NEW PLYMOUTH'S SEASIDE. To-day the Empire Picture Co. will secure a picture of the East End .beach picnic, and this film will be reproduced' in a few days at the Empire Theatre and also throughout the Dominion. '
