"A Wellington telegram states, that Joseph McMahon Box was 72nd in the Junior Civil Service examination.
A London cablegram reports the death of Lord Wenloek, a landed proprietor, who was Governor of Madras from 1891-96.
Mrs. Bailey, matron of the Old People's Home, is away oil a holiday at present, her place being temporarily filled by Miss Mary Elliot. A Sydney cablegram reports that Mr. Johnson, Chief Railway Commissioner for New South Wales, left ,by the Mantua for a short holiday in New Zealand. Mr. C. G. Lee has again been elected to represent the Wanganui, ' Hawera, and' New Plymouth branches at the Locomotive Engine Drivers, Firemen, and Cleaners' Association conference to be held in Christcliurch in February. A London cablegram reports the death at Florence of Mr. Henry Labouchere,! the proprietor of the well known London Weekly Truth. Mr. Labouchere, who was eighty of age, was a member of Parliament from 1864 to 1005. For most ►of this period he sat for Northampton, and for some years had Mr. Bradlaugh as his colleague. He was a member of the Jameson Raid Commission in 180(1. As "a besieged resident" he communicated a series of letters to t ' le T ? a . ily ,^ ews during the investment of Paris in the Franco-German war. His journal Truth lias been very successful in exposing a number of social, financial and administrative scandals. It will be remembered that Truth in-'i terested itsplf iu the Molcau Jones case, i A later cable states that Labouchere was ill for eight days from bronchitis, and that he will .be buried at Sanminiato.
