The Vice-Regal residence on Marble Hill narrowly escaped destruction from a bush fire, which spread from an adjoining property. When the fire was at its height the English cricketers, with Lord Richard Nevill, who had been invited to dine with the Vice-Regal party, dashed through the flames and rendered excellent assistance in checking the fire. DAMAGE IN VICTORIA. Melbourne, January 16. There are serious bush fires in various parts. Sixty thousand acres of Whelra State Forest was swept, and myriads of rabbits destroyed. The town of Daylston was saved after great efforts.
