PERSONAL.
Rev. Canon Kempthprne, of Nelson, is on a visit to his son, Rev. J. A. Kempthorne, of Te Henui. The death is recorded of Mr. Wm. Henry Goodwin, of Ngaruawhia, formerly of the 58th Regiment, subsequently of the Fourth Waikato Militia, aged 80. A cablegram from Rome states that Mr. Henry Labouchere, the famous editor of the London Truth, lies in a critical condiiton at Florence, suffering from heart failure.
Mr. J. D. Henry, petroleum expert and author, arrived in Auckland by the Vancouver boat yesterday afternoon. He was met by Mr. H. J. Brown, chairman of the British Oil Trust, Ltd. They will piobably come on to New Plymouth later in the week.
Mr. P. C. Freeth, formerly editor of the Wellington Times, has been reappointed as from the 22nd inst. Mr. Freeth has lately been running the Petone Chronicle. It is stated that Mr. F. Kirby, the present editor, takes up his old work as sub-editor.
Senior-Sergeant Dart, who has been temporarily in charge of the New Plymouth police isub-district, leaves New Plymouth this morning. He will spend a few days of his leave in Stratford, and will then proceed south. He has not yet received: orders as to his future station. , i •
