MT. COOK MOTOR SERVICE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night, The Mt. Cook motor service, which last year ran to Pembroke from Wanaka, is to be extended to Queenstown, and the first car goes through on the 22nd. The route is said to be varied and picturesque and well worth doing. The serTice will be a weekly one. Mt. Cook attracted many visitors this season, four or five cars being sometimes required from Fairlie. ■ ABSCONDING SEAMEN. Timaru, Last Night. *our seamen absconded from the steamer Clan MaeLaren (now on the way to Auckland) and were arrested in the country. They have been remanded to Wellington. BURGLARS BUSY IN AUCKLAND. Auckland, Last Night. Burglars have been busy in Auckland of late, and several successful and unsuccessful attempts to deprive citizens of property haje been made. In one instance a tailor's shop was broken into and suits valued at between £3O and £4O taken. SPORTS PROTECTION. \ Palmerston North, Last Night. A largely attended meeting of representatives of all local sporting bodies was held last night to form a local branch of the Sports Protection League. After Mr. A. A. Paape, organising secretary, had outlined the aims and objects of the league, it was decided to form a branch in Palmerston. Mr. D. Buick, M.P., was elected patron, Dr. O'Brien president, and twenty-one vice-presidents ■ were elected. It was decided to enter upon a vigorous membership campaign. THE PROHIBITION CAUSE. Wellington, Yesterday. A meeting of the Grand Lodge Executive of the International Order of Good Templars passed a resolution that the first meeting of the board since the poll desired to place on record the magnificent vote in favor of Dominion prohibition at the recent poll arid desired to draw attention to the fact that an absolute majority of the votes was cast in favor of prohibition. The meeting further urged temperance workers to call upon the new Parliament to amend the licensing law in favor of the bare majority.
