ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
SUICIDE BY HANGING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. The body of William David James, a retired building contractor, was found hanging at his residence this morning, suspended by a window cord. Deceased, who was 42 years of age, ( was to have joined his family at Te Kuitr on Saturday. A SEAMAN DROWNED. Christchurch, Last Night. About 4.35 a.m. to-day, Mr. Harry Bowley, a Customs officer on the wharves ,at 'Lyttelton, noticed the body of a man floating in the water, about 20 feet inside of the east side of No/6 wharf. He communicated with the police and the body was recovered. The face was all eaten away by fish, and the body appeared to| have been i|ii the water about a week. It appeared to be that of a middle-aged man, of medium build, about sft 6in. in height, with brown hair. The body was clothed in a green jersey and blue trousers and elastic-sided boots. . In the pockets were found two £l notes, 5s fid in silver, and a pocket knife. Acting-Detective Carney identified the body as that of a seaman, named Campbell, belonging to the steamer Wakatu, wao was missing last Thursday, 4th inst. Detective, Carney was speaking to him that nightj and he appeared to be all well. H» was then wearing a coat, which has since been found in a right-of-way off Norwich Quay. There were no marks of, violence about the body, and it appeared as if the man had fallen into ■ the water from one of the wharves and was drowned.
