Mr, Alexander McMinn, the well known journalist of Palmerston North, was in New Plymouth yesterday and leaves .to-day. f Mr. Cyril Carncross, of the Elthara staff of the Bank of New Zealand, has received notice of transfer to Waitara, and leaves on Wednesday next. i> It was incorrectly stated yesterday that Dr. Harrison intended visiting England. The facts are that he merely intends visiting Wellington, and that Dr. Milroy will act as his locum tenens during his absence. The death occurred at Wellington on Tuesday of Mr. S. Wood at his residiemce, Berhampore, at the, age of 76 years. The deceased, who was a native of Yorkshire, had resided in New Zealand for 48 years. He. carried .'on -business ia W#Hingtoii > for .ihany.. L years as ship, wright. He leares a widow, six som and seven daughters. The Hon, T. Mackenzie, Minister of Agriculture, accompanied by Mr. L. E. Johnston, private secretary, and Mr. B. M. Wilson, director- of tourist and health resorts, arrived from Wellington yesterr day morning, and left in the afternoon for Hanmer, where he will receive deputions to-day. The Minister returns to Christehurcli on Friday, and will probably be present at the social to be tendered Mr. Witty, M.P., on that evening.—Christchurch wire. The Rev. C. Palk, Methodist missionary at Eahotu, died at the New Plymouth. Hospital on Monday morning. The reverend gentleman had been ailing for about six weeks from an internal trouble. For some years deceased, who was 57 years of age, was a no-license organiser, and before going to Rahotu was stationed at Waiuku, Auckland. He is survived by his wife and a family of step-children. The funeral took place yesterday at Te Henui, being conducted 'by the Rev. J. W. Griffin, assisted by Rev. J. W. Burton and Rev. Cannell. At a Salvation Army farewell meeting at Rahotu on Monday evening the chairman (Mr. T. P. Hughson) made feeling reference to the decease of Mr. Palk, and, at his instance, the audience rose and stood in silence for a period out of respect to the late gentleman. Funeral services will be preached at Rahotu and Opunake on Sunday next. Miss Sophia Jex-Blake, M.D., Dean of the School of Medicine for Women in Edinburgh, whose death is just reported, was the youngest daughter of Thomas Jex-Blake, Proctor of Doctors Commons, and was born in January, 184«, in Sussex. She was late attending medical officer of Edinburgh Dispensary and Cottage Hospital for Women and Children. In the year 1806 she began to study modicine in Boston, U.S.A., under Dr. Lucy Sewall. Sh,p returned' to England in 1868, and in 1860 matriculated in the Medical Faculty of the University of Edinburgh. Not being allowed to complete her studies and take the degrees she brought an action, with others, against th© University of Edinburgh in 1872, which she practically gained More Lord Ordinary Gifford, but on an appeal being made, the decision.was rev*sed by a bare majority of the whole Court of Session in 1873. In the year 1874 slue founded the London School of Medicine for Women, and retired from practice in ] S9O. Among her publications were: "American Schools and Colleges," "Medical Women," "Care of Infante," etc.
