A PRESIDENT KILLED.
BLACK REPUBLIC WHICH IT IS DANGEROUS TO RULE. Washington, November 20. A report from Mr. Endicott, the American Charge d'Affaires at San Domingo, states that President Gaceres was yesterday assassinated. He was attacked by two men whose '> identity is known to, the police as he was leaving home yesterday afternoon. He ran into, a building adjoining the United States Legation, but the assassins followed him and shot him. The President was taken into the Legation, where he died half an 'hour afterwards. The murderers escaped to San Christobal. San Domingo, the republic of black hidalgos, has-'been a land of comic opera spoiled by bloodshed ever since it broke loose from Spanish sovereignty in 1865. The first five Presidents and a "triumvirate" retir.ed between 1865 and 1874 because of revolutions. The first peaceful election was in 1880, when the various saviours of their country took a well-earned rest. Ramon Caceres fought for the Presidency. As Vice-President he battled with the then President Morales, and in June, 1909, his efforts were rewarded. Revolutionary efforts having failed against lvim, he has met the inevitable assassin.
