BIG BOARDING-HOUSE BURNED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 8, 11.30 p.m. Sydney, January 8. Rickards' large ■ boarding-house at Monavalc, which was crowded with visitors, was destroyed by fire. The damage is estimated at £IO,OOO. The house was insured in the New Zealand Insurance Company for £6OOO. LAND SETTLEMENT IX QUEENSLAND. Received 8, 11.30 p.m. Brisbane, January 8. The Land Department reports that last year 0,201,719 acres were selected, nearly half a million above the previous jrear. DESTRUCTIVE HAILSTORM. Received 9, 12.25 a.m. Melbourne, January 8. A destructive storm visited the Mudgee district, and hailstones fell which measured 3'/ 3 inches in circumference. A large area of vines, other fruit and pumpkins was destroyed.
