Carson made rousing speeches against separation, and uttered threats of violent resistance to Mr. Redmond's yoke. STRENGTHENING THE EMPIRE. r VIEWS OF MR. CHURCHILL. Mr. Churchill, in a preface to Mr. MacVeagh's pamphlet on "Home Rule in a Nutshell," states that Home Rule would strengthen Britain in the modern world f and make it more secure from danger -and stronger in the hour of need. He therefore anticipates a good and enduring arrangement. He instances the government of Germany and the United States by subordinate parliaments. Home Role, he continues, would draw us near the United States and be the first rnfle**f stone on the road to the unity of the English-speaking races. PROSPECTS LESS HOPEFUL. Received 8, 10 p.m. London, January 8. ■ Mr. Edmonde, speaking at Xenagh, s\ laid he was less optimistic on the question of Home Rule, fearing the Government was overloading itself with the Franchise and other Bills. He regretted that the farmers who had purchased their holdings were displaying a tendency to drop out of the Nationalist organisation.
