OVERCROWDING VESSELS.
AX OFFICIAL EXPLANATION. By Cable;— Press Association—Copyright London, January 3. In connection with the alleged overcrowding of emigrant ships the Pall Mall Gazette, after enquiry at official quarters explains that the traveller evidently overlooked the fact that a steamer's license does not apply when she becomes an emigrant ship. The Board of Trade supervision makes overcrowding impossible. UNDERMANNED AND OVERCROWDED Received 5. 12.25 a.m. Sydney, January 4. Mr. Bell, organiser of the British Seamen's Union, strongly criticises the conditions on emigrant ships, and declares they are undermanned and overcrowded, and badly equipped.
