A PROGRESSIVE ISLAND. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, January 2. The annual report on Papua shows that, the European population is 1032. It has increased during the year by 152. Since 1000 leased areas have increased from 2089 acres to 304,000 acres. Though in the past two or three years there has been a large falling-off of the quantity of land leased and several large leases have been forfeited, agricultural improvements are steadily progressing. The gold output last year was 18,479 ounces, which is an increase on recent years. Mining generally is improving.
