TARANAKI JOCKEY CLL'IJ. SECOND DAY. Yesterday concluded what must be a record Christmas meeting for the Taranaki Jockey Club. The weather in the morning wa.s warm though overcast, hut the fates were again good, as the rain held off until the conclusion of the races. The fields throughout the da}' were good, second dividends being payable in every event but the Christmas Handicap, in which there was one defection and only four competed. In fact, the fields and close finishes were a compliment to the work of the handicapper (Mr. Geo. Morse). The starting was first rate, Mr. Budge despatching his fields away well, though on one or two occasions some of the horses were inclined to be fractious. The judging was also satisfactory, Mr. Pigott making no mistakes, though called on to decide some close finishes, particularly for second place. Throughout the whole day nothing occurred to mar the plealure. It was a holiday crowd out for amusement. If incidentally they had an occasional trip to the pay-out window that added to the pleasure; if not. well, they tried again. The sum of £8715 10s was put through the machine, as against £6474 10s on the second day of last year, making a total of £18,235 I'Os, against £13,087 10s last year, an increase of £SI4S. It must be remembered that last year bookmakers were licensed. During the day numbers visited the totalisator house, so as to become familiar with the working, and surprise was expressed at the number of the staff necessary, all of whom were kept busy. Our first day's remarks re the arrangements were also applicable to vesterdav. They were excellent. The Garrison Band, under Conductor Cummin#, rendered another line programme. Results:—
