The Government has proposed in the Chamber of Deputies that a subsidy of £20,000,000. to be spread over a period of twenty-five years, shall be paid to the Menageries Maritimes Company and the Societe d'Etudes de Navigation for mail and other services in the Far East, Australia. East Africa. Brazil, and the River Plate. The bulk of the subsidy is to be devoted to the construction of 19-knot steamers convertible into auxiliary cruiser*.
