SHORTAGE OF WATER—AND BEER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Sydney, December 23. The shortage of watetf is seriously j affecting brewers and cordial manufac- , turers. Many hotels aro unable to supf ply the demand and at least one has - doubled the price of beer. Some are depending largely on bottled liquor. A WESTRALIAN LOAN. Perth, December 23. i In the Assembly the Premier introduced a Loan Bill for £2,142,000. The chief items provided for are railways and agricultural development. Mr. Scadden denied that the Laborites were a non-borrowing party. The loan expenditure must continue at a high rate for five years. STATE SAVINGS BANKS. 1 Sydney, December 23. Referring to the Victorian Savings Bank Bill, Mr. Dacey states that New South Wales already has power to establish the agencies sought in the southern ! State. The Government is establishing twenty-four agencies in centres which are now affected by the stoppage of post offices doing business and others will rapidly be pushed on. OUTBREAK OF TYPHOID. Sydney, December 23. A serious outbreak of typhoid has occured at Barrenjack irrigation works. The Shire medical officer recommends the burning of the houses in order to prevent the possibiity of the contamination of the water supply. MADAME MELBA OPERA SEASON. Sydney, December 23. Madame Melba concluded her Sydney opera season yesterday. There was an enormous and enthusiastic audience. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DEADLOCK. Adelaide, December 23. Both Houses of Parliament sat late with the idea of coming to an agreement on the appropriation Bill, but adjourned without settlement. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONES. Melbourne, December 23. The Government has decided to instal automatic telephones at Geelong in order to test the system with a view to ascertaining whether it is justified in extending it throughout the Commonwealth. YOUTHFUL INCENDIARIES. Sydney, December 24. Five youths have been arrested in connection with the WooHoomoolloo fire. THE LIECHAIIDT TRAGEDY. Sydney, December 24. Theo hild Brady, one of the victims of the Leichardt tragedy, succumbed to the , effects of the poison. NOT SMALL-POX. Sydney, December 24. The supposed small-pox case at Mindaroo has been diagnosed as chicken-pox.
