Miscreants at the cemetery at Pere La Chaise opened the coffin of Madame I*intelme, an actress who wa.s drowned in the Rhine in July, and stole jewels, including a pew necklace worth 400,000 francs ( £10,000). During subsequent police investigations the men who were, digging attempted to ventilate tho grave by dropping in lighted newspapers. The shroud accidentally ignited and set the coffin ablaze, and firemen had to be summoned. A DIFFERENT VERSION. Paiis, December 22. further search showed that jewels were not stolen from Madame Lantelme's grave, but were all found in an envelope under a pillow. The value of the jewels does not exceed £2OOO.
