December, 1831.—Piikerangiora pa, Waitara, fell to the Waikatos. December 23, 1843—Arrival in New Zealand of Captain Fitzroy, R.N., as Governor. Governor Fitzroy is credited with causing all the Maori trouble in Taranaki. Instead of .being firm, he is said to have given up land claimed by the natives, and when they got a little they wanted nrore. Hence the war. December 31, ISfiO.—Capture of ■Matorikoriko pa, ami defeat of a large body of Waikatos. December 3, 1803.—The Xew Zealand Settlements Act parsed, giving the Governor power to confiscate the lands of insurgent natives. December 8, 18(13. —Occupation by troops of Ngaruawahia. British flag hoisted on Jlaori King's flagstaff. December 3, 1574. —Arrival of the Marquis of Xormanby as Governor. December 19, 187!). —[Following statutes passed: An Act to assess property for the purpose of taxation; Triennial Parliament Act; an Act to qualify every resident male of .21 years of age and upwards to vote. December' 19, ISS7. —Act passed to reduce the number >of members of tho House of Representatives, to seventy-, four, including four Maori representatives. December 5, I'B9o.—First election of members of the House of Representatives under a practical manhood suffrage, and on the one-man one-vote principle. December 8, 1902.—Pacific (All-Red) cable service opened for international business. . December 11, 11)07.—'Parliament building destroyed by fire. December 7, 1908.—Purchase by the Government of the Wellington-Mana-watu railway. December 24, 1009.—Land, Settlement Finance Act passed.
