FRANKLEY SCHOOL

BREAKING-UP CEREMONY. The prize-giving ceremony in connection with, the Frankley school was held in the gymnasium, Frankley road, last night. The .building was crowded. Mr. W. Bendall, chairman of- the school committee, presided. A capital programme of songs and recitations was given .by the school children. The school concert had only been held recently, so no special! trouble had been gone to in the preparation of the programme, which was practically impromptu. It, however, was most successful, every item being applauded. The items were as follows: — Song, "The Waggoners," lower standards; recitation, "The Traveller's Return," Master Sole; recitation, ''The Late Supper," Master Putt; song, "Six Little Marks," lower standards; recitation, "Twilight," M. Lovell; recitation, "Discontented Umbrella," Winnie Downes; recitation, "If I were a Sunbeam," lower standards; song, "The Cuckoo," lower standards; songs, "Land of My Fathers" and "The Lark," upper girls; recitation, "Something to Spend," Standard I. pupils; song, "The Quakeresses," upper standard girls; recitation, "The Fairy Garden," Standard 11. girls; song, "Rest thee now," upper standard girls. Miss McDermid, who was responsible for the musical programme, presided at the piaino. The headmaster (Mr. Winfield) reported that the rail number at the beginning of the year was 86; present roll 91—47 boys and 44 girls; average for the present quarter 82, and for the year 70. An average attendance of 80 for the year would entitle the school to another teacher. He was sorry to lose the se* vices of Miss O'Rorke, who has finished her two years' course, she having bees appointed assistant mistress at Rahotu. Miss McDermid and Miss O'Rorke had worked earnestly and conscientiously, and the junior pupils had made excellent progress. (Four pupils out of six gained certificates of proficiency. The dux of tho school was Alix Warren. The following children made full attendance: — Alix Warren, Leslie Newell, Gerald Boswell, Cedric Newell, Jack Lovell and Elsie Cole. He thanked the committee for the work they had done and the interest they had shown in connection with the school. PRIZE LIST. Mr. 11. Okey, M.P., then presented the prizes as follows: —■ Dux.—Alix Warren, who received a special prize of a volume of Shakespeare, presented by Mr. Ballantyne. Standard Vl.—Attendance: Alex Warren 1, Leslie Newell 2, Alma Bullot. Marks: Nellie Bendall. Standard V. —Attendance: Cobcrt Lovell and Elsie Lobb 2. Marks: John Kendall 1, Elsie Lobb 2. Standard IV.—Attendance: Gerald Boswell 1, David Grant 2. Marks: Dorothy Chapman 1, Phyllis Heal 2.

Standard 111. —Jack Lovell and Cedric Newel! 1; Alexander Reed, Jean Bullot, and Keith Bendall 2. Marks: Elsie Jury 1; Alexander Reed 2. Standard II. —Attendance: Elsie Cole 1; Margaret Lovell, Keith Bullot, and Aylmer Putt 2. Marks: Eileen Ballantyne 1>; Winifred Downes 2.

Standard I.—attendance: Ivo Grant and Claude Reed 2. Marks: William Hansen 1; Olive Prentice 2. Primer ll.—Attendance, Ronald Bendall 2. SEWING PRIZES. Standard VI.: Alma Bullot; standard V.: Alix Warren; standard IV.: Dorice Leigltton; standard III.: Vera iLeigh'ton; standard II.: Dora Heal; standard I.: May Ferguson. Highly commended: Dorothy Chapman, Doreen Prentice, Winnie Downes, and May Garner. Cheers were given for the headmaster •and Misses McDermid and O'Rorke. The school committee then entertained all present at supper, after which the adults indulged in a dance.
