HIGH SCHOOL BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the High, School' Board of Governors was held yes- i terday afternoon, when there were present: Messrs. X. K. MacDiarmid (chairman), Eyre-Kenny, Percy-Smith, E. Dockrill, D. Hutchen. anid Dr. Fookes. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were .read from the secretary of thie Education Board rc plans for the proposed addition to building; also stating that the Governors will agree to borrowing up to £BOO on the leases; and thaniking the board for a grant of £3O. i The Treasury Department notified the board that £227 9s 10 (capitation for the second term) had been remitted and placed to the credit of the board. A letter was read from Mr. F. J. Heatley re the extension of scholarships by ] adding rural subjects.—Resolved; that Messrs. Percy-Smith and Fra'ser be a 1 committee to confer with Mr. Heatley on ithe matter. COMPLIMENTARY.
The following letter was read from Mr. E. Pridham:—"Will you kindly convey to the Board of Governors my thanks for the very kind way in which they received my resignation, and for the handsome way in which they have treated me. During all the years that I have been in this school I have received nothing but kindness and consideration at the hands of the governing body, and this has been of no small help and encouragement to me in carrying out duties which -often presented considerable difficulties. I trust and' believe that the school will prosper under my successor, and that the board will reap the fruits for which they have so long anid so earnestly striven." 'ALTERNATE TENDERS. On the motion of Messrs. Percy-Smith and Dookrill, it was resolved that the committee for the new school .building be requested to consider the advisability of calling alternate tenders in wood and concrete. CONFERENCE._ It was decided that the committee recommend to the conference that the scholarships be increased to £BO, ojid that the term be four years. The chairman and Messrs Eyre-Kenny and Hutch'en were appointed a committee to attend the conference of members in connection with the Opaku reserves. There is something like £9OOO accumulated funds, and the Wanganui and Taranaki Education Boards are to meet to see what can be done towards getting the money, which is for educational purposes. After they discuss the matter they confer with the M.P.'s for the district and the Minister. APPRECIATION .
During the' temporary retirement of the secretary from 'the room, the chairman said; that during the past month he (the secretary) had done a lot of additional work in connection with the applications for the position of principal, and proposed that a bonus of £5 be given him for the extra work. Mr. Eyre-Kenny seconded the motion, which was carried. GENERAL.
The architect is to be instructed to give an estimate of the present value of additions made 'by the Principal to the High School premises, and to report to the board. It was decided to recommend to the Minister the re-appointment of Mr. MacDiarmid and Mr. Eyre-Kenny as members of the board for a further term.
The chairman was empowered to give the tennis courts necessary attention 1 during the vacation. The committee will meet at 3.45 p.m. on Friday to consider applications for the position of principal.
