' Dr. Maui Poniare was born at Pahou, under the shadow of Mount Egmont, and is in his thirty-fifth vear. He wag ' educated at the Boys' High School, "i Ohnstchurch, and afterwards, at the i Maori College at Te Aute, Hawke's Bay. s He then went to America, and studied medicine, taking his M.D. degree at the ; Chicago University. While a student, he . went on a trip to England as medical i officer in a yacht owned by the million- , ' aire philanthropist Peabody. He was appointed a health officer to the Maoris by the New Zealand Government in 1001, and was surgeon-captain to the Te Ore Ore Mounted Rifles. He married a daughter of Mr. Woodbine Johnston, a Poverty Bay runholder, and has resided for some years at Lower Hutt. t Mr. Parata is a son of Mr. T. Pnrata, ' who for twenty-six years sat in the /'' House of Representatives as member for • »' the Southern Maori District. He is con- ■ • neeted with three of the principal South Island tribes, ,and is a direct de-. > • seendant of the famous navigator Tama- ■ •tea, who was the chief who directed the Takitimu canoe to the shores of New i Zealand.
