TARANAKI'S CARNIVAL.
Not the least, remarkable feature of the big New Zealand Axemen's Carnival at Eltham during the past, nine years is the fact that never during that period has the weather .been otherwise than delightful. Ham on occasions has fallen right up to the night 'before the opening of the carnival, and on several occasions has fallen in torrents immediately after the conclusion of the second day's events, but never yet has the enjoyment of the proceedings been for a moment marred by the weather. And it would almost seem that the approach of the great event has had a mollifying influence on Boreas and Pluvius, for not for many weeks has King Sol exercised his beneficence over Taranaki so generously as within the last 24 hours. At the time of writing the weather seems ait last to be settled, and if this prognostication holds good, the only remaining doubt of the record success of the carnival on Tuesday and Wednesday next at Eltham will be removed. In every other respect the arrangements are complete; the entries are exceptionally large, the grounds are in perfect order, the facilities for the. convenience and bodily comfort of patrons are better than ever, and the arrangements of the Railway Department are right up-to-date. Given, as we hope, fine weathor, the big carnival should result in earning for its energetic promoters in Eltham further kudos from New Zealand axemen, sawyers, cyelists, and 1 the public of the province.
