TO COMBINE SHIPPING INTERESTS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 18, 10 p.m. London, December 18. The Times states that, subject to shareholders' ratification, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company and the Elder Dempster Company will acquire all the Union Castle Line's ordinary shares, and adds that tho companies are interested in a scheme for the biggest combination of shipping interests in the world. The Financial Times., commenting on the scheme, says tihe Cape will become a more important centre of overseas trading, and will possibly ultimately be one of the world's clearing houses. One of the immediate results must be to bring Australia and Soutih Africa into closer touch.
