Three other premises were badly damaged and several others damaged. Damage is estimated at £IO.OOO, which is covered by insurance. ALLEGED THEFT OF POSTAL NOTES. Hobart, December 15. A court case has commenced against two men charged with stealing postal notes, which, it is alleged, were posted to an agent of Tattersall's. Accused obtained large sums through the post. OVERDUE BARQUE ARRIVES. K Sydney, December 15. The barque Jufeopolis has arrived in good condiiton. The captain stated it was untrue, as reported l by the Corinthic on arrival in New Zealand, that the barque had lost a portion of her spars. ATTEMPTED TRAIN-WRECKING. Sydney, December 15. A serious attempt was made to wreck the train at Muswellbrook. Five sleepers were placed on the rails. The engine struck and dislodged the obstructions, and the train was not damaged. CHEAPER CABLE RATES. Melbourne. December 15. The deferred press rate of ]%d a word from Vancouver-Australasia applies from yesterday. DECREASE OF CHILDREN. Melbourne, December 15. The census returns show that the population between the ages of 5 and 15 years has decreased in ten years by 8231. Persons of other agis have increased in numbers.
