Who Will Govern ? Mr. Massey or Sir Joseph Ward? Yesterday's Second Ballots An Indecisive Position STATE OF THE PARTIES. OPPOSITION 36 MINISTERIAL 33 LABORITES 5 INDEPENDENTS 3 77 MAORIS TO BE ELECTED 3 TOTAL SEATS 80 The elections for the second ballots, held yesterday in thirty electorates, resulted in the Opposition winning eleven seats, the Government eleven, Laborites five, and Independents three. The state of the parties is now as above. It is probable that even if the Government gain the three Maori.seats, as anticipated, a majority of the Independents and Laborites will vote against the Government on a no-confidence motion. To all practical purposes, therefore, the Government is defeated. Whether the Opposition will be able to carry on the Government of the country with a small and unreliable majority, is an open question.
