STOPPING PRIZE FIGHTS
A SYDNEY DEPUTATION'S AIM. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 4, 5.20 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. A deputation of the Evangelical Council asked Mr. McGowen, Premier, to legislate against boxing contests, which, they declared, were nothing more nor less than prize fights. They argued that Sydney was being made Hie dumping ground for pugilists, who would not add to (lie moral tone of the place. In reply, Mr. McGowen declared that lie was ignorant of the modus operandi of these contests, but anything that was tabooed in Great Britain should not be tolerated here. If he possessed the power to prevent contests developing into brutal exhibitions, or anything other than exhibitions of skill, he was determined to do it. The question of the money element would be considered by Cabinet.
