AUSTRALIAN PROSPERITY.

A STRONG BASIS. .By Cable—Press A=soti;iSl<H»-—Copyright. Melbourne. November 30. Mr. Hunt, Federal Meteorologist, declares that the widespread belief that the present Australian prosperity is due to the exceptional rainfall, and that drought years are certain to follow, is not correct. Since 1002 the rainfall has been below the average, but farmers have benefited by the mistakes of the pioneers, the capabilities of the soil are better understood, and the adoption of dry farming and drought - resisting wheat have given payable crops in spite of the poor rainfall. The better control of the rabbit pest, the conservation o c water and fodder, and the tapping of the artesian basin have also helped the prosperity, and should be an incentive to greater energy.
