The Olympic and Hawke collision has, according to London Fairplay, caused underwriters to have reflections, which have taken the form of asking themselves what the result might have been if tin's collision had taken place, say, off the Lizard, and it had been found necessary to beach this steamer of 45,000 tons. The question naturally arises: Are our salvage steamers keeping up in power and efficiency with the increasing size of our big liners, and would they have been able to get this vast mass of metal into shallow water? Another reflection has taken the form of the query: What would have happened if ■the Hawke had struck her amidships instead of on her quarter? Visions of the Oregon, sunk by a schooner, and the .■Republic, lost 'by collision with the Florida, while the memory goes back to the loss of the Atlantic liner La Bourgoyne, sunk after collision with a sailing ship off the banks of Newfoundland. All these reflections have resolved themselves into the question: Is it wise to Tun such heavy lines on a vessel whose fate rests not so much on herself as on other ships?
