Robinson recovered £IOOO damages from Louis Cohen,! author of a book of reminiscences of Kimberley, and £I.OO from Bennett, the publisher of the book. In the hook it was alleged that Robinson's early career was as a fraudulent dealer, swindler and coward. Robinson gave evidence that he lost his hearing through exposure on the Basuto battlefields, and that he had contributed £IOO.OOO to assist the war against the Boers and £BO,OOO after the restoration of peace. He -denied Cohen's allegations. Cohen gave evidence that Robinson's reputation in South Africa was that of a liar, coward, betrayer of women, and illicit diamond-buyer.
