SOME FACTS CONCERNING THE NOSE.
There are 14 bones in the nose. A blunt nose is generally indicative of dullness. Pimples on the nose are frequently caused by indigestion. In extreme old. age the sense of smell is often entirely lost. In all ages the nose has been regarded as strongly indicative of character A nose of proper proportions should be one-third the length of the face. A sharp nose pointing forward is the characteristic of impudence and curiosity. Tn man the sense of smell is less developed than that of sight, as it is much less needed. A large nose in a weak face is indicative of unintelligenee and stupidity. Idiots have such noses. Pugilists say that a, blow on the nose is attended with more pain than one on any part of the body. A red rinse may be due to a choleric temper, a bad temper, or bad liquor. Tn any case, it is undesirable, Man is the only animal whose nostrils open downward. Even in the highest apes the nostrils open to the front. ' The nose is "turned up" only in a figurative way. Turning up tlie nose really means drawing up the muscles at, its corners. The Semitic nose is not. as generally supposed peculiar to Hebrews. The same type of nose is possessed by several nations of the Orient. The lower portion of the nose does not perceive (he sensation of smell; the power for perceiving odors resides in the upper part of the nasal envitv. Tt is said that Napoleon, when he needed a man for sudden emergency, generally chose a soldier with a good Roman nose. He was seldom deceived in his choice of men. The openings of the nostril are protected against the entrance of foreign bodies by stiff hairs, which also serve to catch and detain much of the dust | always floating in the atmosphere.
