CRICKET
OPENING OF THE SEASON. Cricketers were favored with fine weather yesterday for the opening of the season, which was postponed from last week owing to the had weather. Inglewood met Carrington Road on the Recreation Sports Ground, and some good cricket was shown. lnglcwood totalled 130, of which George Gudgeon notched 05 (not out) by nice careful cricket, whilst at the call of time Carrington Road had scored 56 for the loss of four wickets. The outfield played rather dead as the result of the recent wet weather.
New Plymouth journeyed to Urenui and defeated the country team. New Plymouth, who lost the toss, were sent to the wickets first, and scored 78, of which Hasell scored 34 and Williams 18. Boss Puller secured seven wickets for 13 runs. Urenui could make no stand against the bowling of Nicoll, Williams and Whittle, and were all dismissed for 40. Full scores were not available last night. INGLEWOOD v. CARRINGTON ROAD.
Inglewood won the \oss and went to. the wickets, Clegg and Pullen opening to the bowling of Bevan and Simpson. Clegg opened his account with a three off the former, followed up by a two off Simpson. In his third over Bevan sent up a full toss to Clegg, who mishit to the off, where he was well held by GwilHm, one wicket being down for nine runs. Gudgeon followed and was nearly taken by Gwillim after he had scored one. Runs mounted slowly to sixteen, where Billing relieved Simpson. The batsmen relished the change and hit eleven off the first over, including a fourer each. In his second over he got Pullen caugki out off a mishit with the score at 32, of which the retiring batsman had made 18. Marsh followed and scored two. At 37 Gwillim relieved Billing and opened with a maiden. Marsh hit Bevan to leg, Avory accepting a nice catch. Matthews, who followed, fell l.b.w. to Bevan without any further addition to the score, and two runs later the same ibowler shifted Quickfall's bails. With five wickets down for 39 Inglewood's prospects looked blue. Thompson here joined Gudgeon, who had a let off when he was 13. Gudgeon continued patiently, and with the aid of 10 (including two fourers) from Thompson, the score mounted to 01 before Bevan bowled the latter. Dr. Gault followed, and at GO Simpson relieved Gwillim. Dr. Gault, who had opened carefully, hit his second ball to the boundary, repeating the dose with Bevan next over. The score crept up and at 77 Gudgeon should have ibeen run out. He signalised his escape by driving Bevan to the boundary. A single to Gudgeon and two twos and a single to Gault made this an expensive over. At 89 Avery relieved Bevan, and one run later Perham failed to accept a catch from Gault. At 102 Robertson, who had relieved Simpson, bowled Gault, whd had put up a meritorious IS). Billing followed and a few runs later Bevan again took the ball. Gudgeon, who was playing with more freedom, hit him to the boundary twice in succession. At 133 Gudgeon had a life through two men simultaneously attempting a catch. At 124 Billing was caught. The two remaining batsman did not stay long, and 1 the innings closed for 130, of which Gudgeon compiled 05 (not out). Bevan, six wickets for 57, and Robertson, three for 16, bowled best. Inglewood had been two hours at the wickets.
At ten minutes past five Smith and Elliott opened to Gudgeon and Billings. Each over produced one run. In Gudgeon's second over Elliott was smartly stumped by Matthews with the score at three. Robertson followed and was given lives by Pullen and Clegg respectively in his two first balk from Gudgeon. The third he hit to the boundary. With the score at nine Smith was well caught in the outfield by Quick-fall off Billing. Perham followed. Robertson quickly knocked up 15 before Gudgeon scattered his stumps. Three wickets for 24. Gwillim followed and allowed Perham to do most of the hitting, the partnership adding 20 before Billing got one past GwiHim, who had scored eight. Simpson (5) and Perham (17) played out time. Inglewood's fielding was very indifferent. Scores:—
