AN UNDESIRABLE.
A LEAP FOR LIBERTY. By Cable—Press Association— Copyright Auckland, Last Night. An Italian named Salvetta Dario, who came to New Zealand in the barque Australia and is prohibited from remaining in the Dominion because he is unable to pass the education test, but who disappeared from Wellington, was arrested at Westport on a charge of false pretences and sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment at Auckland and then ordered to be put aboard his ship. Dario was being escorted to Auckland by Constable Hodgson by the express, and when near Mercer he leapt off the train, which was 'travelling at a high rate of speed. The- constable saw the man fall and roll over, but he was apparently unhurt aa he started running, and so far has not been recaptured. BRIEF LIBERTY. Auckland, Last Night. The prisoner named Salvetti Daris, who escaped from custody by jumping nil' the .Main Trunk express this morning near Mercer, was recaptured this afterm>;m by Constable Sherman at Otaliuhii.
