THE SPOTSWOOD SETTLEMENT

MR. OKEY CHALLENGED. To the Editor. Sir,—(Mr. Okey in his vapourings at the Theatre Royal on Monday night insinuated that bribery and corruption had taken place in connection with the purchase of the Spotswood Settlement, and said that this transaction should have been included in the Hine charges. Mr. Okay's innuendo was quite clear that the late Mr. E. M. Smith was implicated dishonorably in the purchase of this estate. As one who knows the whole facts of the transaction, I can solemnly declare that Mr. Smith did not receive one farthing directly or indirectly for anything he may have done to "enable the State to purchase this land. If Mr. Okey thinks he is going to secure his return to Parliament by attacking the dead he will be sorely disappointed, as there are witnesses now living ready to come forward and disprove his malicious falsehood and misleading statement. If my father had 'been less scrupulous and honest in his political actions, he would have not died the poor man he did.—j I am, etc., J. c. SMITH.
