A JOCKEY'S DEATH. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Charles Cress, a jockey from Hastings, died at the hospital, and at the inquest held this afternoon, a verdict was returned that death was due to gastro enteritis. BELTING ACCIDENTS. Gisbome, Monday. Arnold Rounthwaite, an expert on Dominion milking machines, met with a severe accident at Te Arai. His foot was caught in the belting of an oil engine, and his leg curled round the wheel, the thigh being broken and the leg fractured below the knee in nine places. The- amputation of the leg was performed last night. Christchurch, Monday. William Lurch, a young man employed in' Auslebrook's biscuit factory, was killed by being caught in the belt of an -engine. He was whirled round the pulley ■and terribly injured. AN OLD MAN'S DEATTI. Dunedin, Monday. Patrick Coakley, aged 92 years, an inmate of the mental asylum at Waitate, wandered therefrom on September 24. His body was found in the bush two miles away from the institution. FALL FROM A TRAIN. Christchurch, Monday. Evidence given at the inquest on tho death of Maggie Gallagher, a single woman aged 37, showed that she fel] off a moving train to Richmond on Thursday night, but no adequate ex planation was forthcoming. Halfway be tween two stepping-places she stood up 'suddenly without saying anything, and fell backwards to the road. The verdict returned was accidental death. suicide at man:gatoki. The Eltham Argus states that John Wright, farmer, of Mangatoki, had shot and drowned himself «t about 7.30 yesterday morning., The body was taken from a creek near Mr j. Hair's property by Constable Wade and Mr. Fitness.
