STRATFORD LINE DEVIATION
STATEMENT? BY SIR J. FINDLAY. In speaking to .an Auckland Herald representative the Minister for Justice (Hon. Sir John Findlay) alluded to the proposed deviation of the StratfordOngarue railway line. "Cabinet," said bir John, "decided to alter the junction with, the Main Trunk line because the alteration shortens the construction of the new line by six miles, and consequently saves an expenditure of £(io 000 Further, the alteration was made on the strong recommendation of the Kivineer-m-Chief, and in order that I may bo in a position to more fully explain the change I have asked the Under-Secretary for 1 üblic Works at Wellington to send me a copy of the engineer's report, and nlso a map showing the deviation." u "May I add," continued the Minister that the previous proposal to join the mam line at Ongarue was based on an earlier survey, which, on a closer and more thorough-going examination by the engineers is shown to be plainly less des rable than the one now determined
