PARIHAKA ROAD BOARD
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Pfirihaka Road Board was held at Raliotu on Thursday. Present: Messrs. Young (chairman), Harvey, Willcox, Potter and Dueker. A vote of sympathy was extended to Mr. Willcox and family in the loss sustained by the death of a daughter. The action of the committee in accepting the tender of Mr. W. Revell (.CM) for metalling five and a quarter chains on the Ruakere road was confirmed. The committee reported that the result of their interview with the Reserves Agent on Pungarelm road with respect to the road deviation, was that the Reserves Agent requested the Maoris to put their fence off the road to the proper surveyed line. The Board resolved to give Messrs. Moffit and Goodwin and D. Greomvay three months' notice to move their fences off the road to the proper line. ■Messrs. Crisp and Symons asked the Board to get an estimate of the cost of making a new road on the legal surveyed road site. .Mr. J. P. Kennedy (foreman) reported that the work of metalling 5% chains on Ruakero road was in progress. Specifications have been drawn for contract on the Ihaia road—Public Trust grant. Part of the road from Mr. Fcaver's section to Mr. Hickey's corner had been repaired, and wa.s now in good order. Forming and metalling was now in progress on the Kaweora road. A portion of the Kaweora road wanted forming up, and Mr. Denham offered to do the ploughing if the Board's staff would do the forming. The Waron road required repairing for about a mile near the creamery. A good pit was already opened up in Mr. Magon's place. It would require 200 yards of gravel, which could be put on the. road at a cost of 3s per yard. Repairs had been done to the Pungarelm. Bayly, Stent, Upper and Lower Kahui roads. There were some bad places on the Upper Arawhata road, which required repairs, but he considered it would be advisable to hold the repairs over until after Christmas, when more
money would he available. Mr. J. Doody asked if the Board would pay half cost towards making six chains of drain on the Bayly road, which would be of service in draining the road. The question of the Bayly- road drain was held over. The, foreman was authorised to repair the Warea road, as recommended, and also to spend £3 on the Waiteaka road, conditionally on Mr. Denhnm doinp the ploughing. Tenders were received for work on the Upper Ihaia road, to absorb the public trustee grant of .£134, which the Reserves Agent notified would be paid on receipt of the Board's certificate that the work was done, as follows: Siev- i wright and Vickery, £135; M. Mulvihill, £l2B (accepted)'.' The foreman's estimate was .€12!). The account referred to at a previous meeting in connection with the scarlatina epidemic is to be sued for. The Reserves Agent forwarded to the Board I racings of'mad deviation in the bank Mor-lc of IV-ihaka. for the Boards apiimval and agreemenl. .Mr. Willcox brought up the question of the men's wages. After discussion it was decided that the foreman be authorised to pay fls per day to first-class men. Mr. CYiomhridgc wrote that the Upper Wailcika road special loan was drifting into a very bad state, and asked the Board to spend the rates in the area. — To be informed that the Board had already decided to do so. A petition was received from Messrs. John de Castro and M. Fennell,.ratepayers, asking the Board's co-operation to cause .Mr. Paul Willcox to vacate his seat sis a member of the Parihaka Road Board, as he is not on the ratepayers' I roll.- The chairman was authorised to [obtain legal opinion on the point raised by the petitioners.
