In the Arbitration Court to-day Norman Campbell and Agnes Campbdl, of Janefield. near Mosgiel, claimed £273 as compensation as partial dependents of their son James, who was" killed i; 1 March by accident a't Millerton while ii the employ of the Westjorl Coal Co. Decision was reserved. Edward Lawrie claimed £2B 10s Oil compensation from John Waldie, slaughterma.n, for accident on .March ■><), whereby his elbow was fractured and otliei injuries sustained thrp.tigh facing of! a laddtr. For plaintiff; it was claimed that the accident .occurred on the third day of his ; empiwwieijt. 'i'he defence was that- the plaintiff 'was not engaged and. that h 6: was helping defendant's- son and other slaughtermen with the object of securing' an engagement". Defendant admittd that he gave .plaintiff: 2s fid and saw his son lend him 10s.. It was admitted that defendant's sou usually had assistance, but that »t the time of the awklent lie had none. The court liekf that thr plaintiff was working for defendant and awarded him £2O with costs £7 7s (witnesses' expenses and disbursement-).
