Ask with and representatives of the railway companies and workers had a con- J ference at Downing street. The purpose of the conference was not disclosed. MIDLAND COMPANY INCREASES WAGES. Received 5, 5.5 p.m. London, November 4. The Midland Railway Company have fixed the minimum wages of the lower grades at 22s per week for London, £1 for large townsi, and 19s per week for other places. As the arrangements progress the higher grades will benefit, too. BALLOT OF RAILWAYMEN. GOVERNMENT BLAMED. Received G, 1.10 a.m. London, November 5. After a four days' discussion a conference of the executives of four unions resolved to .take a ballot of the railwayman as to whether they would accept the commission's report or strike in favor of recognition and the all grades programme. The ballot is returnable by December 5. A resolution regrets that the Government had failed to arrange a conference of directors, which, in the opinion of the conference, might have resulted in a satisfactory settlement. COAL-OWNERS REJECT DEMANDS. Received 0, 12.45 a.m. Sydney, November a. At the meeting of the South Wales Conciliation Board the coal-owners rejected the demand for the minimum wage.
