HIGHWAY ROBBERY IN LONDON
London, September 1. Mr. M. Hopton, a diamond merchant, who carries on business in the cities, was last Friday morning, in broad daylight, robbed by two men of diamonds valued at about .£3OOO. Mr. Hopton left his house, 20, Colvestone Crescent, Kingsland road, about 10 o'clock for the city, and had only proceeded a few yards when he was set upon by two "welldressed men. He was trust against a wall, and held in a helpless position while his pockets were rifled, and then the thieves escaped in a taxicab which was waiting near at hand. There were several witnesses of the affair, but the thieves worked so expeditiously and drove away so promptly that the spectators were unable to prevent them from escaping. Among those who saw the incident was Mrs. Garcia, who lives almost opposite the house of Mr. Hopton. Mrs. Garcia says that she went out to do some shopping, and saw a stout man leaning against the railings a few doors away, and a second man. who was looking suspiciously about him. She came to the concl ision that they were bookmakers. The stout man rushed across the road, seized Mr. Hopton by the throat, calling out, "Now I've got you." He pinned Mr. Hopton against the railings. The second man, who had by this time been edging closer, also seized Mr. Hopton and, placing his knee against Mr. Hoptnn's stomach, kept him against the railings and then went through his pockets. Mrs. Garcia called out, "You blackguard! To rob a man in the broad daylight!" He did not take any notice of her, and she saw him take from Mr. Hopton a small case about the size of a pocket-book. The two men then dashed along the street to a motor cab. The driver of the cab bad, apparently, been attending to his engines, but lie instantly mounted the vehicle, and the two men jumped in and the party drove rapidlv away. Mr. Hopton, who has offices at Gamage's buildings, Holboni. is agent for serI eral firms of diamond dealers. I - 1
