« (Conducted by "Eileen.") I \ SOCIETY NEWS. | I NEW PLYMOUTH. Bridge.—Last Wednesday evening Mrs. G. Kcbbell entertained a few friends at j bridge in honor of her guest, Miss Ivy Cottier (Hobart). Mrs. H. Stocker won the first prize. Amongst those present were: Mrs. S. Cottier, Mrs. (Lewis Webster, Mrs. H. Stocker, Misses Bedford (2), Mrs. Percy Webster. The same evening Mrs. Addenbrooke gave a most enjoyable card party at her charming residence on the Old Waterworks road. There were five tables | and the prizes were won by Mrs. Home (first) and Mrs. Baily (second). The hostess received her guests in a dov« grey silk, cream lace vest, finished witli folds of black silk. The guest of th« evening was Mrs. Butler (Mrs. Adden--1 brooke's sister), who, with her family, is leaving shortly for her future home in Wellington. Wilson, ' Mack silk, cream lace shoulder scarf; Miss N. Hamerton, cream silk. THEATRICALS. - .' In the Theatre Royal, next Monday evening, Harry Rickards' Vaudeville Co. '[ will open for a short season, and al-' though every item is of the highest standard (vulgarity .being carefully, eradicated), the moat fascinating is that, of the lady gymnast, Alcide Capitaine,' who is announced to be the most grace-1 fill aerial performer ever seen on the' Australasian stage. She has appeared in, all the noted vaudeville houses in!

Europe and all over America. The combination is said to be a very strong one, consisting of twelve important star acts, all under special and exclusive engagement to the -firm of Harry Rickards. For one night only ( Thursday, 9th November) Messrs. Clarke and Meynell's new English Comic Opera Company will present to New Plymouth theatregoers the Latest London success, "Sergeant Brue," which is described as a clever and catchy musical comedy. The music is by Liza Lehmann. of the song cycle fame. "In a Persian Garden." The lyrics are by Hickory Wood, and the book by Owen Hall, a veteran in musical comedy. There are no fewer than nineteen songs and choruses in the play, as well as u number of dances. It is said that the music that exhibits the most individuality is that supplied for the quadrille at the end of the second act, danced by society people in the Green Park Hotel "Sergeant Brue" is claimed to be the happy hunting ground for the comedians. This play will be produced in precisely the same manner as it is being staged in the principal cities of the Dominion. WEDDING BELLS. . On Friday afternoon, Miss Leila Webster, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. 1). WAstcr, was married to Mr. J. Morton, of the local Telegraph Department, now on transfer to Napier. The ceremony was performed in St. Mary's Church pro-Cathedral, Parnell, at 3"30 p.m. by the Rev. F. G. Evans, actingVicar of St. Peter's Church, Devonport. The bride was given away by her father, Miss Winifred Webster acting as chief bridesmaid. The wedding breakfast was held at Mrs. P. Lusk's (bride's sister's) residence, after which the happy couple left by the express en route for Rotorua, where the honeymoon is to be spent. Mr. and Mrs. Morton are expected to return to New Plymouth on Thursday next, when they will remain for a few days before they finally leave for their future home in Napier.
