DRINKING IN N.S.W.
AN ARCHDEACON'S VIEWS. By Qible—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, November 1. Archdeacon Bovee attributes the increase in the consumption of drink to the prosperous year and continued enlargement of the spending power of the people.
Last year, lie says, benefited only to a small extent from the reduction of licenses by the local option poll, as the majority of the voted out hotels are still open, but many private and immoral bars and bogus clubs have been closed. The bars are shut 011 election days, and Sunday closing is fairly complete. Convictions for drunkenness on Sunday have decreased from 1330 to 320. Local option has already done much to keep down the drink bill. A remarkable feature is the growth of consumption of colonial beer, the workers' beverage, of which 1,077.000 gallons more was drunk than in the previous year, while the consumption of spirits increased 128,470 gallons.
