BAND CONTEST. By Telegraph—Press Association. Oisborne, Yesterday. Entries for the North-Island Band Contest close on Saturday next. They are coming forward freely, and a 'successful gathering in February next is assured. A GIRBORNE DOCK. Gisborne. Yesterday. The Oisborne Harbor Board is considering the question of building a dock for the convenience of shipping and to avoid the necessity of sending their dredge to Auckland for overhaul.
FRUITGROWERS' CONFERENCE. Nelson, Yesterday. Delegates to the Fruitgrowers' Conference at Motueka arrived this morning. They received a civic welcome from the Mayor. There are representatives from Auckland, Marlborough, Canterbury, Manawatu, Ilawke's Bay, Wanganui, Waitemata, Nelson and various other places.
COMPENSATION CASE. Wellington. Yesterday. In a claim for compensation, brought by T. Coverdale against the City Council for £2320. on account of the compulsory acquisition of a piece of land for widening purposes, the Chief Justice pointed out that the value placed on the land by claimant worked out at the rote of" .£190,000 per acre. In his opinion people whose property was increased in value by street widening should bear a portion of the costs. The case is proceeding. CONCILIATION COUNCIL. Wanganui. Yesterday. Mr. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, sat yesterday to hear the furniture trade dispute. Practically all matters in dispute were settled except hours, the employers objecting to a reduction of hours owing to the scarcity of competent labor. They aI«o asked for an increase in the number of apprentices from one to three men to one to two men. A similar dispute will be heard in Palmerston tomorrow.
