Charles Mundy and Archie Shields have been charged with conspiracy to defraud the Federal Government of vast areas of coal lands in Alaska. Defendant's counsel attacked the validity of the indictment, and the Supreme Court reserved its judgment on the point. WRECK OF THE MORE. Received 27, 12.10 a.m. Ottawa, October 2fl, The Department of Naval Defence decided to hold a courtmartial i:i connection with the stranding of 11.M.5. Niobe in July. As there are not sufficient officers in the Canadian navy to constitute the court, a number will be borrowed from the British squadrons visiting Halifax next month.
FATAL MOTOR SMASH. Received 27, 12.10 a.m. New York, October 20. An Astoria-Columbia passenger train struck an automobile, carrying the vehicle a hundred yards on the cowcatcher. Thomas Macgibbon, a business man, was killed, and the other occupants escaped without a scratch.
ESPERANTO CONFERENCE. Received 27, 12.10 a.m. Adelaide, October 2fi. The Esperanto Conference was opened by the Mayor, who welcomed the delegates. Professor Drummond, of Victoria, represents New Zealand.
POSTMASTERS' ASSOCIATION'. Received 27, 12.10 a.m. Melbourne. October 20. As an outcome of the Postal Conference a Postmasters' Association has been formed, embracing the whole Commonwealth.

The barque Thora, from Macassar, is off the Heads, and has been ordered' to proceed to Port Havelock.
