AVoodger, the sprinter, is a passenger by the India, which arrived at Premantle yesterday. A London cablegram spates that Karl Grey, late Governor-General of Canada has been made a G.C.B. ' A Melbourne cablegram reports (he resignation of Mr. Justice Chomley, after twenty-five years' service Mr. Charles Walker has resigned his position as manager of the Wanganui Herald, and Mr, H. Duigan has been appointed to fill the vacancy. Mr. J. Terry, clerk of the court at New Plymouth, has gone to Westport to attend the funeral of his father, who diekl there early on Tuesday morning. A Wellington wire states that His Kxeellency the Governor has undergone a slight operation to 1 his arm which will prevent him fulfilling his engagements for a few days. A large photograph of Sir VVm. HallJones, stretching across two columns, appeared in a recent issue of the London Financial Times, illustrating an article on the trade of the Dominion. . Mr. C'. Flail, M.P. for Waipawa, who is retiring from politics, was entertained at a garden party at Dannevirkc on Monday last. The gathering was a representative one, and very successful. Dr. Karl Kumm, F.R.G.S., Director of the Soudan United Mission, arrived in Wellington yesterday by the Uliinaroa. from Sydney, and was given a reception in the Mayor's room' at the Town Hall by representative elergy and members of the Y.M.C.A. A telegram was read from the Prime Minister, welcoming Dr. Kumm to New Zealand. Dr. Kumm went south by last, night's steamer.—Press wire Dr. K B. MaeDowell, of Chicago, who is collecting material for a series, .of travel lectures to be delivered in the. United States, is at presenf; in Auckland. He intends' to make a ten weeks' tour of the Dominion, taking cinematograph pictures and ordinary photographs, in addition to collecting information regarding the country. He leaves for Rotorua in a few days, and at the" conclusion of his New Zealand tour will visit various parts of the Australian Commonwealth. The Tourist Department of New Zealand was warmly praised by Dr. E, B. MaeDowell, in conversation with a New Zealand Herald reporter, '-ft is one of'the best institutions T have ever met with," he said, "and the scientific way in which the Government work the service has greatly impressed ine." Mr. MaeDowell further said that he found the department's system up to date in all respects, the officials were very courteous, and on the whole the service was far superior to fhat existing in America.
