TRAIN TAKES FIRE.

FIVE HUNDRED ("i IT INK \ BULL SCORCHED. Carterton, October 21. A somewhat peculiar accident occurred last night on the railway train conveying stock from llawke's Iky to Carterton. During the jouivney the engine-driver noticed smoke rising from one of the trucks, and stopped the train and hurried to the scene. He found that the straw in the truck was all ablaze, having, it is thought, been set alight by a spark from the engine. Fortunately, water was near by. and the tire was quickly got under. The truck contained a Shorthorn bull, the first prize'winner at the recent llawke's Bay .show, and some heifers, belonging to Mr. R. D. D. .McLean, of llawke's Bay. The bull, which was valued at .WO guinea--, was badly scorched on 'both sides, but the heifers were only slightly singed. The truck had commenced to burn when the lire was discovered, and there might have been a serious disaster if it had not been noticed till a little later. It is not known whether the bull will be fit for Wednesday's show.
