Revolt in China.
ANOTHER IMPERIAL DEFEAT. MISSIONARIES SAFE. By Cable—Press Awociation—Copyright London, October 23. The newspapers publish an unconfirmed San Francisco telegram announcing that 20,000 Imperial troops •were defeated in the mountains at Wwangsui. London Missionary Society advices state that the country stations are undisturbed, and missionaries at Hankau and Wuchang are safe. Pekin. October 24. Well-equipped troops have arrived at Hankau and are joining the revolutiontries. The latter claim to have enlisted 15,000 old soldiers. Tchuanhung and Tanghuateng are organising a Southern confederacy and are willing to abandon North China to the Manchus. Shantung is quiet. It is officially stated that Yinchang has reached Siaokan railway station, thirty miles north of Hankau. Juicheng has arrived at Kuiking with three gunboats, whicH are coaling and provisioning. A fire at Hankau, near the Russian concession, destroyed areas of Chinese houses and many large warehouses. IMPERIALS IN HIDING. A REBEL TUG UNEXPECTEDLY FIRED UPON. ANTI-FOREIGN OUTBREAK FEARED. Received 24, 9.55 p.m. Pekin, October 24. The rebels are advancing cautiously on North Hankow, owing to the absenceof intelligence regarding the whereabouts of the Imperials. They are encountering slight guerilla opposition. A tug carrying rebels was Wiexpectedly fired on by a concealed Imperial battery at North Wuchang. When the third division of Imperials was ordered to the front 104 deserted. The wild fire of the gunboats at Hankow caused a conflagration. Ichang and Changsha were captured without opposition. An anti-foreign outbreak is feared at Changsha. The local and foreign Customs officers were ordered aboard boats in the river. REBELS RECRUITING. BECOGNITION BY THE POWERS. Received 24, 1 a.m. Pekin, October 24. Rebel recruits are flocking into Wuchang, owing to the Powers' recognition of the revolutionaries.
Privy Councillors recommend the Throne to negotiate with the latter.
