BIG ENTRIES. . ■* By Telegraph—Press Association. . Hastings, Last Night. 'Die annual show of the Hawke's Bay A, & I'. Society was opened at Hastings to-day. The. weather was delightfully fine, hut a strong southerly raised discomforting dust. The entries in nearly every class showed an increase on last year, and the crowds of farmers present gave solid proof that the settlement of Hawke's Hay is progressing apace. The favorable spring enabled breeders to keep their stock in excellent condlition, and exhibits this year maintained the former high standard of the show. In the horse* section and all departments of the cattlesection the splendid competition and undoubted quality were outstanding features. It is, however, in sheep classes that the Hawke's Bay show takes the lead, and in these the entries were more numerous than any previous show. In Romneys there were thirty competitors in the class for ram hoggets, and twenty in the class for peri of Ave. Names of many breeders well known in other parts of the Dominion figured on the programme for the first time. Champion awards.—Cattle: Hereford bull, E. fcjhort, C. A. J. Levett reserve champion. Hereford cow: E. Short. Ayrshire bull: Slack Bros. Ayrshire cow: Slack Bros. Holstein-Friesian hull: W. I. Lovelock. Alderney-Jersey bull: C. H. Thompson. Alderney-Jersey cow: C. H. Thompson. Sheep—Merino ram: K. D. D. McLean. Merino ewe: 8.. D. D. McLean. Southdown ram: Nelson Bros. Southdown ewe: Nelson Bros. Border Leicester ram: J. Dowthwaite. Border Leicester ewe: Mrs. J. D. Onnond. Lincoln ram: W. Perry.
