PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT.
SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS. The Hon. R. MoKenzie, Minister of Public Works, hud his Public Works Statement before the House of Representatives on Tuesday evening. He said:— In submitting the annual statement of the operations of the Public Works Department and the proposals for the current year, 1 nijiy congratulate the House on the substantial progress made with our public works during last year. The total expenditure, though not quite equal to that of the previous year, was still very satisfactory, being no less than I'U.KK),I!,!\ namely, under the Public Works Kmid and separate accounts ' £3,lc-:\,S'.>!i, and under the Consolidated I'u..d <j>si.l<i;j. WAVS AND MEAN'S. At March 31. billO, the available ways and means for public works purposes .' £312,33(i and further funds were received as under:— . Under the Loan Acts of LI;)!). . 330.002 Under the Aid to Public Works & Land Settlement Act. IUIO 1,308.350 Under the New Zealand Loans Act, l.'iflg (i11,,)!M Transfer from Consolidated l°und soo.nno Miscellaneous receipts (i,so(i Making a gross total of. .■.Ci.Mtt.OU The ordinary expenditure of the year amounted to £ 1,5!J2,551; debentures redeemed, £•225'; charges and expenses in respect of raising loans. £(Ki,3li7; other charges. £41211; thus bringing the total disbursements up to £l.!K>3.s(>!), and leaving a credit balance at the end of the year of £l.l-10,045. For the current year it is proposed to provide additional funds as under: — £ Halanco of 1.010 loan 1«1.050 Proposed loan of 1!)11 1.500,00;) Under Aid to Water-power Works Act, 1010 51)0.000 Transfer from the Con-.olidaled Fund 500.00!) Special provision for irrigation works (section 20. Appropriation Act, 191 ft) bOO,0(10 The above, with the balance brought forward, gives a gross total of £3,021,(i!) 5. The estimated expenditure for public works for the current year (excluding separate accounts having their own ways and means) amounts to t2,1)21,000, leaving an estimated balance of £1,0.00,.
