responsible for the picturesque sur-j roundings and good track. Racing there-1 for© was advantageous to competitors, ] and ideal spring-like conditions prevailed, i The programme was a particularly attractive one as the best horses recently racing at .Randwiek were enabled to compete owing to the fact that there was no clashing between the meeting days. The results were looked for as a guide to the .big events of the next fortnight, especially in the weight-for-age races, which were never fuller than at present. There was, too, the biggest Guineas crowd on record. The racing wits good and a great struggle took place between Ma.lt King and Comedy King for the State. It provided the 'best finish seen among weight-for-age horses for some time. Malt King's performance was particularly fine. He was two .lengths behind Comedy King at the half distance, and it appeared that the black had left the'real fight rather late, but he finished' splendidly, and had a great reception at the scales. Results: lola Welter, 7 1; Sharpshooter 9.7, 2; Mountain Heather 8.13, 3. Twenty-one runners. Won by one and a half lengths, a neck between second and third. Time, lmin 29-y 4 sec. Debutant Stakes, of 1350 sovs (for two-year-olds); half a mile.—Golden Gauntlet 1, Deeside 2, Ventura 3. Also started: Loch Amos, Golden Hop, Charlatan, Misspent, Tipple, Florence and Marasea. The latter was first off, and led to the turn from Deeside, Tipple and Charlatan. Deeside led to the distance, where Golden Gauntlet, who had been overhauling the field steadily, passed the leaders and 'won by one and a, half lengths, three-quarters of a length between second and third. Time, 49% sec. Cauffield Stakes, of 1000 sovs; 9 furlongs.—Malt King 1, Comedy King 2, Lady Medallist 3. Rifle Field led to the mile post, Lady Medallist next. Then came Comedy King, Malt King and Rifle last. Lady Medallist led by a length and a half at the back. Comedy ing and 31b.1t King were together on the river side, the New Zealand horse a liength in front. Comedy King then spurted and reduced the lead to half a length, Malt King two lengths away. ! Malt King then chased Comedy King, and the two horses ran head and neck at the distance. A grand and exciting finish resulted in Malt King winning by a short head, half a neck separating second and third horses. Time, lmin 54r l /osec. Steeplechase.— King's County 9.0, 1; Vanguard 11.3, 2; Don Quex 9.0, 3. : Also started: King Qarius, Horizon, 1 Banshe, The Guide, United Kingdom, Altar Boy, Cornstalk. Banshe led to the last half mile, where King's County, Vanguard and Don Quex headed the field. King's County won by several lengths, half a length between second and third. Banshe pulled up lame. Time, 3min S4see. Cautfield Guineas. Woolerina 1, Flaith 2, Popinjay 3. Also started: Elvanite, Sconser, Radiator, Durbans, Posio and Cisco. Settling down, Popinjay gob three lengths ahead of Elvanite, Sconser, 'Flaith, Woolerina, Cisco, Radiator and Durbans. Popinjay increased the lead by eight lengths, but Elvanite and Flaith, racing together, reduced the lead 'by four lengtlis. Along the river, Woolerina and Sconser were next. Flaith i caught Popinjay at the turn into the straight, but Woolerina, coming along fast, cut down both and won by two lengths, one and a half lengths between second and third. Time, lmin 4ly 2 sec. Cisco was fourth; then came Durbans and ißadiator. Posio was last all the way. Toorak Handicap, of 1200 sovs; 1 mile. -Motoa 1, Balmoral 2, Thistlebrook 3. Also started: Mala, Lager, Full Sail, j Hartifell, Sylvander, Lorn, Mary Seaton, St. Vano, Brewster. Motoa led all the way, Balmoral being always handy. Thistlebrook appeared at the turn. Mary Seaton was among the last four all the way.
